Metal Shed Earthing
1) earth via the mains supply cable (but if this becomes damaged and live connects to earth, then the shed might become live; 2)or install an earth rod and connect the shed to that. or any other thoughts ?. Advice need ed please.. shed approx 30m from house double socket ( for lawn mower and the odd power tool drill etc lightweight stuff ) amd light.. As the shed is not part of the electrical system it will not require earthing. if the shed is intended to create an equipotential zone inside it and the shed is tested to show it is introducing an earth potential into this zone then it would require bonding..
Shed earthing. asked by biggles69 (200ft), via swa to a large shed. the 'run' went as follows; from cu mcb in t & e to junct box, convert to swa, burried swa in garden to jb in shed, back to t & e in shed to sub board. swa was 3 core 10mm. used 2 cores as phase/neutral and third core as earth. metal braiding of swa connected to earth cable. So i would earth the outside metal to ground so they are the same voltage so standing on the ground and touching the shed will not result in a shock. i would install an rcd on the supply to the shed so that if there was a short between cable and metal the resulting earth leakage would trip the rcd and shut off the power to the shed.. Sounds like the metal building may be an extraneous conductive part so it will need bonding to the exposed conductive parts of the installation in the shed. simply bond the metalwork to the earth bar of your 2 way board..
